How do I check if an EU VAT number is valid?
Enter the number with its 2-letter country prefix (for example DE123456789) above. We query the European Commission's VIES system live and show whether the number is active for intra-EU trade, plus the registered name and address where the member state provides it.
Is this VAT checker free?
Yes. Single checks are free (up to 25 per day). Bulk checks, consultation numbers, the API and higher limits are part of the Pro plan.
What is a VIES consultation number and why do I need it?
When you include your own VAT number in a VIES request, VIES returns a unique consultation number. Tax authorities in several member states accept it as proof that you verified your customer's VAT number at the time of the transaction — which matters when you invoice with the reverse charge. Pro stores this proof for you.
Why does VIES say "member state unavailable"?
VIES only relays requests to each country's national database. When a national system is down for maintenance, VIES cannot answer for that country. Our live VIES status page shows which countries are currently down; bulk jobs retry them automatically.
Can I check UK (GB) VAT numbers?
No. Since Brexit, GB numbers are not in VIES. Northern Ireland businesses trading goods use the XI prefix, which can be checked here.
