About VATcheckly

VATcheckly is an independent web tool for checking EU VAT numbers. It was built for the people who do this every week: bookkeepers, finance teams and online sellers who invoice businesses in other EU countries and need to know that a customer's VAT number is valid before applying the reverse charge.

Why it exists

The European Commission's own VIES checker works, but it checks one number at a time, gives cryptic errors when a country's system is down and leaves you to save your own evidence. VATcheckly adds what's missing: a clear valid, invalid or unavailable answer, automatic retries, bulk checks from a CSV file, VIES consultation numbers stored as audit proof, and a live view of which countries are down.

Where the data comes from

Every VAT number check is answered live by VIES, which forwards it to the tax authority of the country concerned. We don't run our own register of VAT numbers and we never guess a result. VAT rates are maintained by hand from official sources and were last reviewed on 2026-10-12. See how VATcheckly works for the details.

Independence

VATcheckly is not affiliated with the European Commission or any national tax authority. The free checker is funded by paid plans for bulk checks and API access.
